Plastics and other materials used by vehicle manufacturers are responsible for the emission of odor that is frequently perceived in automobiles. Nowadays, odor testing of materials for use inside cars is standard. In addition to the well-known VDA 270 and the internal regulations of each manufacturer for the control of specific materials, we also carry out individual adaptations and evaluation procedures. In order to obtain valid results with high repeatability using the human perception of smell, precise selection, training, and monitoring of the evaluators is essential. According to the VDA standard for example, during an olfactory test the odor of a material is judged by a trained jury using a graduated scale. This scale varies from grade 1 (not detectable) to grade 6 (intolerable) with typical values below 3. | |
